London Methuen & Company. Ltd. 1946 1st UK Edition Hardcover Very Good in Fair dust jacket Illustrated by Kiddell-Monroe (Joan)
Illustrated grey boards with black titling to the spine and front cover with an illustration of a 'Dragon Fish' picked out in black and turquoise on the grey base. In the original publisher's pictorial dustjacket which lacks 1" at base of spine, 1/4 inch at the top of the spine, and a little loss at the corners, causing slight fading of cloth spine beneath. The dustjacket also has some closed (repaired) tears and some light creases and is a little discoloured here and there but overall is sound and near complete. The dustjacket is NOT price clipped. There is some light discolouration to the edges of the boards - negligible - and overall the boards are near VG. A few very light marks to the first few pages/blank margins but NO Inscriptions or other Marks. Otherwise No other Inscriptions or Marks. 70 pp. The endpapers are illustrated in colour and the rest of the book is delightfully Illustrated in black, tan and green/blue by Kiddell-Monroe. Apart from the minor 'faults' noted above, this is a Very Clean, Tight and Bright, Near 'VG' copy. "An enchanting children's story written by Pearl Buck (a winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature) in which Lan-May Wu and Alice Jones were both tired of their 3 brothers respectively, so they decided to try the magic powers of the Dragon Fish ......" . (Joan) Kiddell-Monroe is best known for her delightful book illustrations, and was a prolific illustrator between the 1940s and 1960s. Using various media, including scraperboard, wash and pen and ink, her work shows a remarkable use of white space and fine line. ; Square 8vo 8" to 9" tall
