Amsterdam Time-Life 1984 Facsimile Reprint Hardcover As New with no dust jacket From the prestigiously-bound Time-Life series "Classics of Exploration". A 1985 Facsimile reprint of the Memorial Edition of 1894, in 2 volumes, preserving the historical authenticity including typographical errors and printing irregularities. The list of illustrations in Volume 1 refers to a picture of 'The Fal' on page 62, but the illustration was never printed so therefore it does not appear in this reproduction either. Hardback in coarse grained mottled brown leather boards (Time-Life actually state that these bindings are Leather, but they look more like 'leatherette' to me - but presumably the publishers know what they are talking about? ) with Bright Red/Gilt titling/decoration to the front cover and spine. The front cover has a double red/gilt border, 6 raised bands on the spine with gilt titles and or decoration in the intervening red panels. Silk headbands and a yellow-gold ribbon bookmark. As New/No Jacket. All page fore-edges bright Gilt. This is a Lovely Facsimile reprint. Marbled endpapers. No Inscriptions or Marks. Vol 1 = (xxxiv) + 209 pp. With a b/w Map , 2 colour plates and 3 b/w illus in the text. . Vol 2 = (14) + 276 pp + 3 pp Advertising other books by Burton. With a b/w Map , 2 colour plates and 4 b/w illus in the text. Includes 2 Appendices - Appendix One : - 'Diary and Observations made by Lieutenant Speke when attempting to reach the Wady Nogal'. Appendix Two : - The Grammatical outline and Vocabulary of the Harari language. Complete with the loose leaf 'details of the book' and a special uninscribed 'Ex Libris' bookplate provided by Time-Life pasted on to the front endpaper. I currently have c.5 other Travel and Exploration books in a uniform binding in the same series - please enquire if interested. All in a similar condition. An Excellent Very Clean, Tight and Bright 'As New' copy. Looks unread. "Following his Pilgrimage to El-Medinah and Meccah, Burton here describes his adventures in Somalia as he attempted to become perhaps the first white man to penetrate the forbidden Muslim city of Harar. He travelled in the same disguise that took him to Mecca, as Haji Mirza Abdullah, an Arab merchant. It was on this expedition that Burton was first joined by John Speke, at the suggestion of James Outram. Speke originally abetted Burton's plans in Somalia, but differences quickly arose between the two, and Speke over the years became Burton's great nemesis, taking credit for discovering the Nile and deprecating Burton's efforts in every sphere...." ; Classics of Exploration; Vol. 1 & 2; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall Price:
