The base colour to the spine is faded/sunned but all titling is clear, with a white blocked design on the front board with the title sillhouetted in black inside the white blocking, and 'Horizon' in white at the foot of the front cover. NO Dustjacket. The page fore-edges have some light foxing (spotting). This book came from the Library of the late Arthur Giardelli, the well-known Artist, and his name, location (Pendine) and Date (1948) is written by him on the front pastedown. Internally VG plus. Most of the text is in FRENCH but 4 of the main essays have been translated into English on 12 fine paper pages by Douglas Cooper. " Masson was born in Balagny-sur-Thérain, Oise, but was brought up in Belgium. He studied art in Brussels and Paris. He fought for France in World War I and was seriously injured. His early works display an interest in cubism. He later became associated with surrealism, and he was one of the most enthusiastic employers of automatic drawing, making a number of automatic works in pen and ink....Masson escaped the Nazi regime on a ship to the French island of Martinique from where he went on to the United States. . Upon arrival in New York City, U. S. Customs officials inspecting Masson's luggage found a cache of his erotic drawings. Denouncing them as pornographic, they ripped them up! ! . Living in New Preston, Connecticut his work became an important influence on American abstract expressionists, such as Jackson Pollock.
