SIR THOMAS MORE (1478-1535) was a friend of ERASMUS and became LORD CHANCELLOR under HENRY VIII - but refused to take any oath that would impugn the authority of Rome or recognise the King's divorce from Queen Catherine, and this led to his trial for treason and beheading.
