Both volumes uniform in burgundy coloured cloth-covered boards with gilt titling to the spines. No dust-jackets. Extremities rubbed, corners and head/tail of spines bumped/rubbed. Some marks, but overall sound tight covers. Some patching where an old library label/numbers would have been - but overall the set looks quite good. SEE IMAGES. Both volumes now in a new protective clear - removable - bookfilm plastic cover and look quite Good. (Images taken without the new clear covers. ) Internally e/p's browning. An Ex-library label stuck to both front pastedowns, and a 'Withdrawn from stock' stamp on each of the front free endpapers. On Volume 2 ONLY there is also a lengthwise 'hole' (5cm x 0.5 cms) near the inner top of the front free endpaper and 2 small (1.5 cm diam) 'decorative' purple stamps on the reverse of the half title. All Hinges sound (slight indications of re-glueing). NO OTHER LIBRARY MARKS or other marks, that I can see, on either volume. Volume 1 = (x) + (4) + 456 pp and Volume 2 = (8) + 448 pp. Photogravure frontispieces to both volumes and 10 (on 9) other illustrations to Volume One. 'Rough-cut' page edges, which are lightly browning in places, but overall both books internally are clean, tight and bright. Beginning as a private secretary and assistant to Abraham Lincoln, Hay's highest office was United States Secretary of State under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt.
