The Publisher's Note to this New Edition, now First Published in a Larger Format, states... " 'Little Black Sambo' made his first appearence in October 1899 .. In a tiny booklet ..... NOW 'LITTLE BLACK SAMBO' IS ONCE AGAIN REPRINTED, BUT IN A NEW AND MORE IMPORTANT FORM as becomes the proud position he has won for himself as a classic of the Nursery." . Pale blue boards, with dark blue titling to the spine and a dark blue illustration of Little Black Sambo with an Umbrella to the front board. A few light marks, and a little light rubbing to the boards, particularly to the very tips of the corners and to the head/tail of the spine, but overall the boards are Very Clean and the titling/illustration is clear and quite bright - the covers are now in a new protective clear - removable - bookfilm plastic cover and look VG. NO dustjacket. The Front and Rear free endpapers are browning and there is a tiny oblong booksellers label on the foot of the front pastedown o/w NO Inscriptions or Marks. Small 4to - Size is 9.25" x 7.00" . 58 pages. 27 lovely enlarged colour plates, the text is in large print also. These plates still remain very close to the original plates of the 1st edition. Delightful! The heroes of many of Helen Bannerman's books are recognizably South Indian or Tamil children from the illustrations and use of words. For instance, the book 'Little Black Sambo' has the words 'Ghee', 'Tigers', and 'Bazaar'. The books have nothing to do with Africa or African people, and the plots celebrate the intelligence and ingenuity of the children. However, the name Sambo has come to be seen as a slur on people of colour and the books have often been blacklisted or censored and are STILL seen as very un-PC! Overall an Excellent Very Clean, Tight and Bright copy of what appears to be the First Large Format Edition. - See Images. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall
