This Dublin first edition is same year as the London first edition. Contemporary full calf - sound but with some damage to the leather. There is a 1" split/loss to the front top inner hinge, the rear bottom hinge is splitting (0.75") and the leather generally is scratched/marked/rubbed with some patches surface rubbed or completely missing the leather. The spine has 7 gilt bands (not raised) and a (chipped) burgundy leather Title label lettered in gilt. Overall the hinges are Tight and the covers sound - the spine looks reasonably good on the shelf. (2 blank endpapers - almost detached, then the book starts at the title page. ) Pagination runs - 439 pp + (1 blank) + 10 pp Index + 2 pp Publisher's Adverts. ? Rear blank endpaper is torn and crumpled. There is a previous owners' stamped name at the top of the ffep, the page fore-edges are dusty/browning lightly, otherwise apart from the loose/crumpled endpapers the book is internally very clean with No Inscriptions or major marks. The book is by Thomas Birch, one of the original Trustees of the British Museum and Secretary of the Royal Society with much added documentation, incl some from Harleian MSS. Birch's 'Appendix' to this book is 128pp long and filled with fascinating facts including 'The ordering of the Prince's Chamber'; 'The names of the Prince's Highness's servants belonging to the chamber, with their wages and board wages'; Similarly the wages, etc, of the rest of the Royal household including 'Sewers' and 'Comedians and Players', etc, etc; 'Diet for the Prince's Highness'; 'Sample meals' (vegetables don't get a mention! ) ; Letters from Sir Edward Conway; The Funeral Procession; etc. A Royal Stuart biography.
