A Folio of " A Selection of the Most Interesting of Sir Robert Ainslie's Celebrated Collection of Views in EGYPT, ASIA MINOR, etc, etc." . This is a Selection taken from Ainslie's 2 collection of Views, each containing 48 views, originally published separately in 1801 and 1803. The Front and Rear (grey/green paper covered) Original boards are Detached and Scuffed/Scruffy, The title label on the front cover is torn away and only retains the word 'Views', and there is No spine - but all content is present. The quality paper pages are sewn in sections and the sections are loose in the non-existent spine. Internally : - blank (stained) pastedowns, free endpapers, Title Page (a former owners' name in old ink at the top) , Contents list, then 24 lovely hand-coloured aquatint engravings, originally drawn by Luigi Mayer. Including the margins, each page measures 19" x 13.5", but the actual image measures 12.5" x 9.5". There is a little light old damp-staining to the top right hand corner, almost neglible on many of the engravings, affecting the blank margins only, but visibly creeping into the very top corner of the image on about 6 of the 24 images. (see photos showing a sample of the best and the worst, or ask for photos/further info). Some light 'thumbing' and a few marks here and there in the blank margins, and some age browning/dust to the page fore-edges, but Overall the Images are Excellent, tho' one or two will need a good mount to obscure the corner staining if framing. Whilst Sir Robert Ainslie was England’s Ambassador to Turkey at Constantinople from 1776 until 1792, he amassed a collection of original drawings by the Italian artist Luigi Mayer. This is a Folio Selection. Images are as follows: - EGYPT: Part of the New City of Alexandria, withthe New Harbour and the Pharos; The Gate of Rosetta in Alexandria; The Pyramids; Passage from the 2nd to the 3rd Gallery in the Great Pyramid; Gate of Grand Cairo; Principal Square in Grand Cairo, with Mourad Bey's Palace; Mamalukes Exercising in the Square of Mourad Bey's Palace; An Ancient Sarcophagus of Basaltes at Grand Cairo, called The Lover's Fountain; Pompey's Pillar; Port and Harbour of Aboukir; The City of Rosetta; An Egyptian Ball at Ned Sili; A Village on the Western Bank of the Nile, Midway between Cairo and Rosetta; An Egyptian Fair at Kafr Radoin, A Village on the Eastern Banks of the Nile, between Ned Sili and Menouf; A Ferry Boat Crossing the Nile; An Egyptian Bey; A Mamaluke Exercising. ASIA MINOR, etc: Harbour of the Ancient Gnidus; The Castle of Boudron, in the Gulf of Stancio; Ruins of an Ancient Temple near Corinth; An Ancient Bath at Cacamo in Caramania; The Triumphal Arch at Tripoli in Barbary; Ancient Theatre at Cacamo in Caramania; A Colossal Sarcophagus at Cacamo; Ruins of the Great Aquaduct of Ancient Carthage. To retain this as a book it will need to be respined at least, but likely this will be sold as a 'breaker'. The aquatints are delightful and (imo) should be on display. Further images/details on request. ; Folio 13" - 23" tall
