Hastings from the White Rock

By: Ross Thomas

Price: £45.00

Quantity: 1 available

An original antique hand-coloured lithograph engraving. Mounted and ready to frame. Very good condition. Probably not contemporary colouring, but very delicately and expertly executed. In this litho “Hastings from the White Rock” The White Rock Brewery is on the left, Wellington Square in the centre, and Pelham Crescent towards the right. The White Rock is yet to be cut away. No date, but I'm pretty sure this print has come from a selection of 10 larger lithographs than his earlier volumes = “Ross’s Views of Hastings and St. Leonards” - the book was undated but was no later than 1849 because they all show Ross at 6 Castle Street (he moved from there to Claremont in 1849). Image Size 8.65" x 5.6" (21.7 x 14 cms) , but NOT including the border and Title/Printer, so it displays larger. The artist - Thomas Ross, Drawing Master, who was also five times Mayor of Hastings, produced 13 editions of his Hastings and St Leonards Guide between 1835 and 1863. The earlier editions of the guide were somewhat sparsely illustrated which seems strange bearing in mind Ross was also a drawing master. The Lithographer - Lynch. A scarce and an attractive original early engraving. See Images. ; Oblong 8vo 8" to 9" tall
