FIRST WORLD WAR items from a collection by an unknown member of the 1st Wing Royal Flying Corps. All Pencil sketches apart from the Map which is in ink with some colour. I'm fairly sure the Map is hand-drawn but it could be a printed map with ink detail added? A note on the bottom right says " Shell Hole Dropped April 28, other bust over the road and a pencil date of 1916. It seems possible that the unknown amateur artist was a C. Parks No.18399 ? As this was written on the top of a couple of the pencil sketches. The Programme and Menu is 'photocopied' in that distinctive purple print produced by an early copier, and hand coloured (faded) in part. They seemed to eat well, with a choice of Roast Beef and Yorkshires, or Roast Pork and Apple Sauce + Sprouts and Potatoes, etc, ending with Nuts Fruits, Wines, Cigarettes and Cigars, presumably after the entertainment, which is listed with 'cast' in the centre of the programme. The drawings in the main feature various areas of the encampment and district, but feature the Balloon and the Balloon bed and the Balloon ascent quite a lot. Also drawn are some of the personnel in the camp, and a few local churches. These are not works of art, though a few are more 'polished', but working and information sketches? The sketches are various sizes, from postcard size to Oblong 4to (10" x 8") and drawn on any paper available it seems. Some torn, creased and scrubby. One sketch of huts is on a headed sheet of paper (Y. M. C. A with H. M Forces on Active Service ...1915). Some drawings are un-captioned, others have more thorough captions (of a wood and distance with the Balloon in the sky) like "Bois de Verdrle No 8 KBS Neuux le Mines Bethune No 10 KBS Hersin Coupeny RE Yard"; others just say "Inside my Dugout" or similar. Also a few sketches of the men with just a single name like 'Rayner', 'Nickells' and 'Bertie Ham' etc. Most poignant is the sketch showing the 'Balloon Bed and Guard Room and in the foreground 3 Crosses on what are obviously graves. I have no provenance for this collection, it came in a Auction lot some years ago and I've only just re-discovered it, but although this is just some very amateur drawings of life in the R. F. C. During WW1, it is also a fascinating glimpse at 'ordinary' life in the squadron in France during the Great War. There is an A M Parkes (Air Mechanic) in the programme - and this could be the artist?
