Mapp of the Isles of Iapon (Map of the Isles of JAPAN. from Pitt's English Edition, 1688, of Tavernier's 'collection of Travels...' )

An early English language edition of the map of Japan from Tavernier's 'Travels'. Tavernier, at the behest of his patron Louis XIV, published 'Les Six Voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier' in 1676. Then a supplementary 'Recueil de Plusieurs Relations' (1679) , in which he was assisted by a certain La Chapelle. This contains an account of Japan, gathered from merchants and others, and one of Tongking, derived from the observations of his brother Daniel, who had shared his second voyage. Tavernier, a gem merchant, travelled only to China, but included a description of Japan in his account. This Map appears in the english version of his book - the title being "Collections of Travels through Turkey into Persia, and the East-Indies...Together with a Relation of the Kingdom of Japan and Tunkin..." . This copy is thought to be a 2nd printing of the first english edition. This rare and unusual map of Japan features a graphic illustration of the islands with pictorial depictions of mountains and forts, etc. An inset of Tunquin (North Vietnam) depicts the river system centered on Hanoi and the Gulf of Tonkin. The Sea of Korea (Coreer) and the country's tip can be seen below the inset. On stylistic grounds the map has been attributed to the engraver Herman Moll, making it one of his earliest works. Image size = c. 35 cm x 51 cm (13.9" x 20.1") but actual size with the original margins = 38 cm x 53 cm (15" x 20.9"). Taken straight from an original, faulty, copy of the book, this is an excellent clear impression, but with the original folds/creases from having sat in the book for over 300 years! . The original paper hinge is still attached to the rear where it was attached to the book. 3 small repairs to the reverse, with archive tape, where 3 small holes appeared at the centre of folds - now 'invisible' - a few tiny spots and the very top edge of the margin is tanning with age. Apart from these slight, minor flaws, the Map is undamaged, complete, and a VERY GOOD Plus copy. Quite Rare. See Images. ; Oblong Folio 20" - 21" long
