Title on the spine reads - Spurrell's Welsh-English Dictionary. 3/6 . In Russian green cloth-covered boards with a bright gilt welsh log and blind stamped decoration to the front board, with gilt titling and borders to the spine. The head/tail of the spine are 'bumped' with one small nick to the foot o/w very good clean, bright covers. All hinges tight. Page fore-edges toned and lightly foxed (flecked). This copy was a gift to the Author/Publisher's daughter Jessie, and has an inscription on the front free endpaper which reads = "Jessie Spurrell Whit Monday May 17. 1886. The Gift of her father ". Plain lemon endpapers. Some pale foxing spots/small patches to the first few pages, the edges, and the edges of the last few pps. Paper quality is toning but uniformly and overall clean and , apart from the foxing, unmarked. An original copy this early seems quite scarce and the fact that it was presented to his daughter by the Author makes it a nice Association copy. However not sure that I'd be too happy to have a Dictionary given me as a gift from my father some 20 plus years after its publication! I wonder how she felt about it. A different era then however !
