Overall a very good hardback book. In the original gilt lettered brown cloth-covered boards, with a touch of corner rubbing to the tips only. In the publisher's dust-jacket - Good Plus - in a new removable protective cover - the original clear cover was attached to the reverse of the d/j which shows traces of the old clear cover to the reverse only. The d/j is NOT price clipped. Top edge brown. Page edges lightly toned (slightly yellowing) . Internally some very light offsetting to the plain endpapers, one small spot to the title page o/w NO inscriptions or other marks. Very clean, tight and bright. (xxxi) + (3) + 433 pp + a suite of b/w plates on glossy paper at the end. A substantial work including over 200 line drawings, more than 96 monochrome photographs, Appendix, list of abbreviations and a good sized Index. The FIRST EDITION of this now Classic work.
